:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sleepyhead -- A emotional look into real life : This book was absolutely real, honest & heartbreaking. It’s a very deep & personally intimate examination of grief & loss, the kind of family dysfunction that creates multi-generational impacts, but we just don’t talk about, & the bigger problems in our world that often have life-altering consequences. Highly recommend…with a box of tissues. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cathlene S -- Well written memoir about surviving abuse : I worked with survivors of domestic violence many years ago. This book is more than true crime and a domestic mystery: it may help survivors understand why they do things that make them most miserable and are most likely to perpetuate self-hatred; it provides competent resource information; and it ends with hope. Sometimes when you live under the weight of abuse witnessed and experienced during childhood, hope can be elusive. But it doesn’t have to be. Read the book ❤️ ( Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from R -- A Captivating and Heartfelt Read! : I have always enjoyed the many books I read by this author. They were entertaining and very creatively written. Her latest book was very different from anything she ever wrote-a true story about her mother’s sudden death and speculation on who killed her. As I was reading this, I was in awe of all the author had accomplished regardless of her nuclear and extended family consisting of abusers, rapists, and drug and alcohol addicts. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wendy Nelson -- Heart Breaking yet Engaging : I have read and also helped edit some of this author's other books - but those were all fiction. This story is a memoir about her mother, her mother's death, and the dysfunctional life they both lived. I knew none of this prior to reading this book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Phthon -- Poignant and heartbreaking : This was difficult book to read. To realize that someone I admire so much has had to go through such heartbreak and self doubt, it breaks my heart. I had a hard time putting it down but I had to take breaks so that I could collect my thoughts before continuing on. This book is so frank, open, honest, and contains some hard things to read. I did truly enjoy reading this book. Kory is an amazing author and to know that she has gone through all of this just makes me admire her that much more. Awesome book! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rosemary56 -- Who Killed My Mother? - a review by Rosemary Kenny. : Kory M Shrum's searingly honest, autobiographical masterpiece, reveals the traumas and ongoing effects, the unexpected death of her substance-abusing, alcoholic, neglectful mother and manipulative, deceitful and at times cruel treatment, by her family in general and her uncle - suspected by police of being culpable in what they labeled as a probable homicide - in particular, has had on her since that dreadful day in 2020. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Siamese Lover -- Insight into dysfunctional families and recovery : A difficult read but very rewarding in terms of the insights into the workings and causes of a dysfunctional family. The author recounts her early years along with a poignant picture of how family members cope with abuse. The story (true) explains clearly the actions of family members through her discussions and attempts to find out the truth behind her Mother's death. Family secrets are revealed, and curious actions of family members become clear as the actions of others are revealed. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from xperson306 -- Difficult Memories. : I had deliberately avoided the podcast series ‘Who Killed My Mother’ as I wanted to read the story in it’s complete form. This is a sad, but compelling tale about Kory’s mother, her family and Kory herself. There are no good guys or bad guys in a fictional sense, as these are/were real people. However, there are some about whom I cannot express my feelings in a book review. Thankfully the ones in this category are no longer breathing the same air as the rest of us. It is about survival in a cruel world and people’s ability to still love/care for others despite their own struggles. It is also about self forgiveness and Kory’s struggle to come to terms with her mother’s death. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Catsonthebed -- Kory : It was one of the book jackets that started me reading this magical Author, her stories that addicted me. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kensuth1 -- Awesome TRUE story : Not just a story of loss of mother. Lives torn apart by abuse, neglect, rape and addictions. To survive this and come out stronger takes a special person, Kory. This true story is honestly written and raises points we should all be looking out for. I feel sorry that the big question will never see justice but hope the future is bright ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 5, 2021 )
( Reviewed in Germany on October 4, 2021 )
